If you’ve been thinking about trying hypnotherapy but feel a little unsure about what actually happens during a session, you’re not alone.
Many people feel exactly the same way — curious, hopeful, but maybe just a bit nervous about the unknown.

Maybe you’ve seen stage hypnosis on TV and wondered, “Will I be out of control?”
Or perhaps you imagine lying on a couch being “put under.”
In reality, hypnotherapy is nothing like that — and once you understand how it works, you’ll realise it’s one of the calmest, safest, and most empowering experiences you can have.

In this post, I’ll walk you through exactly what to expect in your first session so you can relax, feel prepared, and look forward to the changes ahead.
(And if you haven’t yet, you might want to read my previous post, What Is Hypnotherapy — and How Can It Help with Anxiety? — it’s a great introduction to how it all works.)

Before You Arrive — Getting Comfortable from the Start

Most people feel a little nervous before their first session, and that’s completely normal.
When you arrive (or join online), you’ll be welcomed in a calm, friendly space where there’s no judgment, no pressure — just genuine conversation.

The first part of the session is simply about getting to know you.
We’ll talk about what’s been happening, what you’d like to change, and what “feeling better” would look like for you.
You don’t have to prepare anything — just come as you are.
This chat helps me understand how anxiety affects you personally, so your session can be tailored to you.

Many clients tell me they already feel lighter after this first conversation — often because it’s the first time someone has truly listened and understood what they’re going through.

What Hypnosis Feels Like (and What It Doesn’t)

When we move into the hypnosis part of the session, most clients are surprised by how natural it feels.
You’ll usually sit comfortably in a chair with your eyes closed, and I’ll guide you through some gentle breathing or relaxation techniques to help you unwind.

Hypnosis isn’t sleep.
You’re aware of everything that’s happening, and you can open your eyes or speak at any time.
It’s simply a deeply relaxed state where your conscious mind — the part that worries and overthinks — takes a step back, allowing your subconscious mind to focus and absorb new, positive suggestions.

People describe it in different ways:

  • “It felt like daydreaming, but with purpose.”
  • “I was aware the whole time, just incredibly calm.”
  • “My mind finally went quiet for the first time in ages.”

That relaxed focus is what makes hypnotherapy so effective — it helps your mind absorb calm, confidence, and new ways of thinking on a much deeper level.

 How the Therapeutic Work Happens

Once you’re deeply relaxed, that’s when the real change work begins.
This part varies depending on your goals, but for anxiety, I might guide you through:

  • Positive visualisations — seeing yourself calm and confident in situations that used to trigger anxiety.
  • Reframing old beliefs — helping your subconscious understand that it’s safe to let go of unhelpful patterns.
  • Installing calm responses — training your mind and body to stay relaxed even when life feels stressful.

There’s no “one-size-fits-all” script.
Every session is personalised — whether we’re helping you stop overthinking, sleep better, or feel confident speaking up at work.

You’ll remain aware throughout, and many clients find it such a pleasant experience that they don’t want it to end!

After the Session — Calm, Clarity, and Subtle Shifts

When the hypnosis part finishes, you’ll come back to full awareness easily and naturally — often feeling refreshed, calm, and lighter.
Some people say it’s like waking up from the best power nap ever.

I always take a few minutes afterwards to talk through how you feel, answer questions, and explain what to notice in the coming days.
Change can show up subtly — perhaps feeling calmer in situations that used to make you tense, or noticing that you’re sleeping more deeply or thinking more clearly.

For many people, that first session feels like a reset button — the beginning of a new chapter where anxiety no longer runs the show.

How Many Sessions Will You Need?

This varies from person to person, but most clients notice real progress after just a few sessions.
For anxiety work, a package of four to six sessions gives time to reinforce those positive changes and help them become second nature.

Between sessions, I may share recordings, simple breathing techniques, or small daily habits that keep your mind moving in the right direction.
It’s a collaborative process — you’ll always feel supported and guided every step of the way.

The Most Common Thing I Hear After the First Session

“I wish I’d done this sooner.”

It’s something I hear time and time again — people realise how gentle and relaxing hypnotherapy really is, and how much lighter they feel afterwards.
For many, it’s the first time in years they’ve truly felt calm.

If you’ve been putting it off because you weren’t sure what to expect, I hope this has helped put your mind at ease.
There’s no mystery, no magic tricks — just science, relaxation, and a process designed to help you take back control.
